Jan 19 and Jan 27: Sweet Cherie at Malcolm X Elementary School
The drum is the heartbeat of go-go. Just like your heart keeps you alive, the drum beat keeps go-go alive.
~Sweet Cherie
The music room at Malcolm X Elementary School (DCPS) was alive with the sound of go-go, facilitated by founding Teach the Beat teaching artist Sweet Cherie! Nearly 50 students learned the fundamentals of go-go music during her two visits in January, culminating in a kiddie go-go for the second through fourth graders. One student soloed “Mr. Magic” on the keyboard and a few played along with Sweet Cherie as she introduced the class to Chuck Brown’s take on a Duke Ellington classic, “Go-Go Swing Live.”
Music teacher Udoh Opiotennione reflected:
We really enjoyed the presentation. Mrs. Mitchell was very engaging and informative. We learned that this is OUR music to celebrate.
